Doing Our Part for our future

A shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future

"The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests." - United Nations, Department of Economic & Social Affairs

The Parkside Hotel & Spa is breaking down each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and working as a team as to how we can better our business, our practices and our future. As we create a plan for each goal, we will continue to update on our progress.

Goal 15: Life on Land

“Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.”

Our hotel is full of life:

  • Through the techniques of our local grounds-keeping company, they promote biodiversity by planting native landscaping throughout our property. This encourages biodiversity in insects and pollinators as well. And, if you’ve stayed in one of our courtyard-facing rooms, you may have noticed the roof of our atrium is actually full of greenery – a living green roof.
  • Our 6th floor Rooftop Gardens is home to splendid colourful flowers and greenery. Aside from the gorgeous plant life and views, you'll also see our beehive from Bees Please Farms.
  • Our partnership with Bees Please helps increase Victoria’s bee population. By providing and maintaining healthy, happy hives and by educating future generations Bees Please aims to lower bee mortality in our region.
  • Our Atrium is home to a lush oasis of plant life. The two-storey glass atrium is the perfect atmosphere for tropical greenery. Thanks to Crystal Gardens, that is how our Atrium got its start. Crystal Gardens has quite the history, but after its pool era, it was turned into a lush tropical plant garden for all to view. It was quite a magnificent attraction. When this was eventually shut down in mid 2000’s, The Parkside Hotel & Spa took the opportunity to save some of the plants that came out of Crystal Gardens. Most of the life you see in the Atrium can be attributed to the historic Crystal Gardens.

Our goals for the future:

  • To create edible gardens around the hotel.  We have some excellent locations in mind and look forward to researching and planning this endeavour with our landscaping partners.
  • We constantly strive to look for new ways to promote and improve sustainable practices around the property.

Goal 13: Climate Action

“Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.”

We understand the impact of climate change and we try to do our very best to help reduce our footprint. So much so, that we welcome Synergy Enterprises to do complete environmental audits every year. We want to know how we need to improve to help our planet. They give us the good, the bad and the ugly, and since we started doing this in 2016, we’ve improved our ‘bad and ugly’ areas and continue to turn those into our good areas. We’re very proud of our growth and will continue to strive towards reducing our carbon footprint as best we can.

Synergy helps us to measure our carbon footprint, engage staff, implement solutions and communicate results. We then work off this reporting with Offsetters who is our carbon offset organization and Canada’s leading carbon management solutions provider. Our carbon offset projects are verified and validated by third parties to ensure that the emission reductions are real, additional and permanent. The projects that we support create both environmental benefits and additional social benefits to the communities surrounding them.

Specifically, the projects are:

Through supporting these projects we have offset the impact of our own emissions by preventing the equivalent amount of emissions from being released elsewhere. We are proud to do business while taking action on climate change.

All of our environmental audits are available to view on our website. You can follow along on our progress each year.
