Known for being among the top tourist destinations in Canada, Victoria in British Columbia remains serious about tourism promotion. Arrivals to the city, however, were down last year, and tourism officials were looking for ways to boost the industry, according to an article published in Peninsula Daily News. Thus, early this year, the local government, through Tourism Victoria, launched a major project called “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown.”
The project aims to encourage Victoria’s own citizens to enjoy the city the way tourists do. Locals can absorb the sights and sounds that visitors love, through free or discounted access to attractions, restaurants, and retailers, as well as the hottest Victoria hotel deals. It is also hopes to increase tourism-based revenues this year.
The “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown” promotion ran from February 28 to March 3, 2013. It involved a booklet containing discount coupons that could be used in partner establishments and destinations. Booklets were sold for $10 per person or $40 for five, and contained coupons from 56 partner establishments that participated in the project.
To widen the project’s scope, Tourism Victoria extended the promotion to visitors from the North Olympic Peninsula and allowed them to buy the coupon booklets from select stores or online. For every purchase of a booklet, they were entitled to free MV Coho Ferry tours, just like Victoria residents.
According to Tourism Victoria CEO Rob Gialloreto, the city has slid down the list of top destinations in the world—from no. 7 to 18—in less than 10 years. They are optimistic, though, that 2013 will be a better year for Victoria’s tourism industry, and are targeting an increase of 1.5 percent over last year’s turnout.
Besides the participating establishments, however, there are also some who take part in the local government’s efforts to promote tourism by offering special discounts to their visitors. Some of them even extended their promos to further invite people to subscribe to their businesses and make them a part of their Victoria experience. Aside from being a means to entice more visitors and increase their revenues, it is also their way of contributing to the effort to boost Victoria’s tourism.
The Parkside Hotel and Spa is one of many great Victoria BC hotel deals tourists can enjoy. The hotel offers first-class facilities at reasonable prices, including guest suites, a club, restaurant, and spa. So if you are planning on taking a vacation or are simply eager to unwind, consider Victoria.
