Learn about urban gardening & sustainable living with LifeCycles

Interested in urban gardening and sustainable city living?

LifeCycles is hosting a great two part series with local urban agriculture guru Geoff Johnson.

Proceeds from the series support LifeCycles, a "nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating awareness and initiating action around food, health, and urban sustainability in the Greater Victoria community."

Here are the descriptions of the workshops from the LifeCycles Project organizers:

Urban Homesteading Workshop

Introduction to Urban Homesteading with Geoff Johnson

Date: Friday, September 24th 2010

Time: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Location: Compost Education Centre – 1216 North Park Street

Cost: $15.00 – You Must Pre-Register due to limited space

Description: As public concern over peak oil, climate change, and food security grows, so too does the movement to “re-localize” our resources.

Much more food, water, and energy can be produced and cycled in the city than most community members realize, and where better to start than our own home habitats?

This presentation will provide an overview of various systems that can be developed to make existing urban homes more sustainable and autonomous.

These include:

• Soil and Fertility

• Food production (short and long term)

• Harvesting and cycling H20

• Energy Systems and Appropriate technology

Urban Agriculture Bike Tour

Date: Saturday, September 25th, 2009

Time: 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Location: Tour Begins at the Compost Education Centre – 1216 North Park Street

Facilitator: Geoff Johnson & Jesse Margolus

Cost: $15.00 – You must pre-register due to limited space & participant waivers are required, and parental permission is required for youth 16 and under

Description: People are consistently trying to find more and more ways to live more sustainably in the city. This includes recognizing the importance and rising popularity of urban agriculture. Despite living in the city, people have found ways, as individuals, and as collectives, to coordinate alternative food systems by growing locally and sustainably.

Join Geoff and Jesse for a bicycle tour of U.A. sites in Victoria. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, bring your helmet, a lock for your bike, some water and food.

Note: The Intro to Urban Homesteading and the Bicycle Tour are intended to be a workshop series. We encourage people to sign up for both days!

The cost for both workshops is $30 for non-members. LifeCycles members can sign up for the reduced fee of $25.

Please RSVP to fruittree@lifecyclesproject.ca to pre-register your spot for the workshop.
